How do you stand out from the pack during the colder months?
Gents – variety is the spice of life. As stylish men, we need to keep it fresh and show variety in our wardrobe choices. The last thing you want is for people to think you're just a one-trick pony, going along with the herd.
It's easier in summer – a guy can wear bright colors and interesting patterns that help to set him apart from the plain shorts and t-shirt wearing sheep out there.
When the colder months come around it's a different story. Most guy's wardrobe options seem to become more limited and everyone starts to look the same.
In today's article, we're covering the stylish men's pants that every guy should try out this winter to leverage the power of variety to elevate his winter pants game to the next level.
Let's get to it.

1. Wool-Blend Suit Trousers
During the last few months of the year, men's clothing stores start to move away from thinner fabrics like linen and start to move towards thicker materials.
Enter the wool-blend trouser – the tailor's answer to chilly legs in the colder months of the year.
In short – wool-blend garments provide warmth. Typically, wool is blended with synthetic fabrics like Polyester or natural cotton to create a hybrid material. Trousers made from a wool-blend feature the diverse wearability of polyester/cotton and the warmth of wool.
The wool-blend trouser is often considered a more formal option for the winter months. However, that doesn't mean you have to wear a full suit. Many men look great when they dress the wool-blend trouser with a polo top or cashmere jumper. A great option for the smart-casual Christmas party or winter date night.
2. Slim-Fit Corduroy Pants
Corduroy pants – or ‘Cords' – have been worn by men for decades. Typically, cords are thicker than regular pants and sit slightly baggier on the leg.
Now I know many men view corduroy pants as old-fashioned. They were on-trend in the 70s … a decade that isn't exactly known for having a great sense of style. Too much brown and orange, gents – need I say more?
However – corduroy pants can be a great option for guys looking for winter-proof stylish men's pants. To avoid that 70s look – buy a pair of well-fitting, slim-legged cords. Try to avoid bright colors and baggy fits. Well-tailored corduroy trousers are an excellent middle ground between formal trousers and casual jeans.
3. Dark Colored Jeans
Cards on the table, gents – I'm not saying you shouldn't wear jeans in the winter. They're a classic and have been considered a staple item in the stylish man's wardrobe for over a century. It would be irresponsible not to include jeans in my list of stylish men's pants for the colder months.
However – there is a catch. As with any item of clothing, the key to looking great while wearing jeans in the colder months is learning how to leverage fit and color.
When it comes to winter – I advise you to stick to darker colors and slim-straight fits. In the summer months, it's common for men to wear brighter and lighter colors to match the brighter and warmer. On the flip side, darker and deeper colors are more common in the winter as the weather is colder and less vibrant. Try navy, gray, or even black jeans.
Concerning fit – a safe bet is to choose jeans that aren't baggy or tight. The slim-straight fit is a modern take on the classic straight-leg. This fit looks slightly more tailored than regular fit jeans but isn't skinny enough to be mistaken for Yoga pants.
4. Stylish Chinos
A man can wear different types of chinos all year round – they come in hundreds of different shades and can be made out of a multitude of different materials.
When the cold weather comes knocking – it's important that you wear chinos that are hard wearing and thick. In the summer months, it's possible to wear thinner chinos. However, these could be damaged by exposure to the elements in the colder seasons.
Chinos have come a long way in the last few years. It's now possible to get hybrid chinos that maintain the smart-casual style of the traditional design while leveraging the fabrics of more hard-wearing trousers.
Jean-chinos have appeared on the market in recent years – a garment that merges the thicker fabric of jeans with the more formal cut of chinos. While I wouldn't advise wearing these to a wedding – they could be a great option for men who want a warmer chino option when it comes to colder climates.
5. Thermal-Lined Pants
Thermal-lined pants are the big dogs when it comes to warmth in the winter months. These are pants specifically engineered to meet the needs of men who live in colder climates.
Typically, thermal-lined pants feature a cotton-polyester blend that's perfect for durability and warmth – making these trousers perfect for boosting style in chillier climates.
These garments also feature what is known as a Tricot lining. As a fabric, Tricot is stitched in a unique zigzag weave that is textured on one side but smooth on the other. This creates a comfortable but durable lining that is soft on the inside but hard-wearing on the outside.
A word of warning – choose your thermal-lined trousers carefully. Thermal trousers are sometimes categorized as a ‘work garment.' Typically, work garments are built for functionality over style – they may be made of high-visibility material or feature unflattering extra pockets. When purchasing, ensure that your thermal-lined pants are well fitted, monotone in color, and don't have too many pockets on the leg!
Bonus: Thermal Underwear
Although thermal underwear isn't strictly a contender in my list of stylish men's pants – they are worth mentioning as they can help make thinner summer garments appropriate for the colder months.
Thermal underwear is a skin-tight garment designed to be worn underneath pants. Unlike regular underwear, they are made from an insulating material that covers the entirety of the wearer's legs – not just the waist and thighs.
Be warned: although this garment can be invaluable to those men who need an extra layer of warmth in the winter, they do increase body temperature and can cause sweating down below.
There you have it, gentlemen. Dressing well in colder climates isn't rocket science – it's all about striking a balance between functionality and style.
