As men it seems like we've had all the advantages. We rule most of the world and odds are in our favor.
Or are they?
Some issues women never have to worry about – men's issues that range from minor nuisances to crippling problems.
We're being serious in this article. We're bringing to light 9 problems only men face.
1. Shy Bladder Syndrome
Are you familiar with urinal etiquette? Never pee next to another man – everyone knows this.
But where does this come from? Paruresis, AKA Shy Bladder Syndrome. This is a psychological issue in which men (or women) experience difficulty urinating in public. The closer we are to others, the harder it gets.
What do you do when an odd number of urinals are occupied? When the stalls are unavailable? You've got no choice but to bite the bullet and get right in there.
2. Morning Wood
This seems annoying but it actually indicates that you have healthy bodily functions.
Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT) happens because testosterone reaches its highest peak in the morning right after you wake up. While you sleep, your brain relaxes and allows testosterone to flood your system. These hormonal fluctuations can often cause erections.
To top it off, we have to pee in the morning. Ever wonder why this is so difficult?
The chambers in the penis that get filled with blood – the corpora cavernosa and the corpora spongiosum – compress and seal the urethra.
The solution is simple – minuscule pressure on the bladder does the trick. In fact, sitting on the toilet and bending over slightly should get the juices flowing.
Remember though, morning wood is a normal and healthy phenomenon. Don't stress.
3. Random Erections
We deal with this all the time – you see a beautiful woman giving a presentation. You're not a creep, but arousal kicks in whether you like it or not.
Boom, erection. Again, this is the result of normal body chemistry. You should only be worried if these never happen. Regardless, it helps to wear a sports jacket. A book placed over your crotch while sitting will do the job as well.
4. Premature Ejaculations
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Premature Ejaculation (PE) as persistent ejaculation with minimal stimulation. It is among the most common sexual disorders among men, with up to 39% in the general community being affected.
It is believed that chronic PE results from the anxiety induced by an early sexual experience that ended in an unwelcomed climax. The result is a vicious cycle that results in both partners being unhappy.
Luckily, there are medications and processes that can help you last longer.
5. Hover Hand
The Hover Hand occurs when a man puts his arm around a woman without touching her. What does this signal? Insecurity, indecisiveness, and weakness. The solution here is simple: reciprocate.
If a lady poses with you and puts her arm firmly around your waist, it's a safe bet that you can mimic her. If she doesn't, then don't.
6. Making The First Move
A 2011 study took a survey of 87 heterosexual students, asking them if they preferred to approach the opposite sex or to be approached themselves.
16% of men preferred that women approach them, while only 6% of the women interviewed were willing to make the first move.
These results confirm what a lot of men already complain about. It falls on us to do the courting. This forces us to be open to the sting of rejection. The ladies have the benefit of sitting back and taking their pick.
What's the upside? Practice. The worst that can happen is that she says no, in which case you move on. Use these as opportunities to hone your style when it comes to chatting up the ladies.
7. Paying For Dinner
On top of making the first move, we are also expected to foot the bill. There are numerous articles and interviews out there in which women cite this as a tactic.
They use this to determine what they are worth to a man. If you are unwilling to pay for the whole meal, you are implicitly saying she is not worth the price of a meal.
There's no real solution to this, unfortunately. If a lady agrees to go out with you, you should be ready to cover expenses on that date.
8. Making The Money
We've made strides in becoming a more equal society. The number of financially independent women went up to 31% in 2017 from 13% in 1980.
Hard data tells us that we're still obligated to be the breadwinners.
Yet according to a 2017 study from Pew Research Center, 71% of adults say it's essential for a man to be the breadwinner. This goes to show that despite the progress we've made, the pressure is still on us to be financially successful.
This is why men tend to choose unfulfilling but profitable careers – if we don't make money, then we're weak.
9. Physical Strength
Believe it or not, a 2017 study published by Royal Society Publishing discovered that estimates of strength accounted for over 70% of men's bodily attractiveness.
This means that society has a shallow view of men and that we are objectified the same way women are. This is a shame for those more inclined toward intellectual pursuits and have a naturally smaller frame.
There is a bright side to this: You can work out if you choose to pursue the ideal, but it should not be this way.
Bonus Issue: Heightism
This is the worst issue of all because shorter gentlemen cannot help it. Prejudice toward them is real.
In the United States, only 14% of men meet a standard set by an alarming amount of women: 6 feet tall or over. This means that 86% of men are at a disadvantage.
It goes beyond dating. Let's get into some troubling statistics published by Baylor University:
- 90% of CEO's are above average height.
- Job recruiters choose taller men 72% of the time when choosing between those with equitable backgrounds.
- 18 out of the last 22 US Presidential elections were won by the taller man.
- On average, every extra inch gets a man another 600$ in his salary.
Is all hope lost? No – the 86% can adapt and overcome. Shorter men can learn from style icons such as Tom Cruise who take advantage of monochromatic styles. You should also make a habit of concentrating your accessories on your chest and shoulders – this is where you bring in the colorful pocket squares and the boutonnière. It creates an impression of height.
