LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe. I have a LinkedIn account (and AoM has a page on LinkedIn) that I use primarily to reach out to potential podcast guests who don’t have other means of contact. LinkedIn was originally designed to be a straightlaced business networking site, but over the years the platform has slowly developed into this bizarre fusion of posts which range from the earnest and personal to the professional and corporate. There are even LinkedIn influencers. Every time I visit the site, I scroll around and think, “Man, this place is really dang weird.” This article from Every (a sender of business-related newsletters) perfectly describes the strange world of LinkedIn and the culture that’s developed there. It made me literally laugh out loud.
Once an Eagle. This is a beast of a novel that my father-in-law recommended to me several years ago. I read it a couple years back and really enjoyed it. The novel takes place between 1910 and 1960 and follows the military careers of two men: Sam Damon and Courtney Massengale. Each man approaches his service in different ways. Damon is a field commander who cares about his troops, while Massengale rises up the ranks through politicking and brown-nosing in Washington. Lots of good leadership lessons from the book. It was actually part of the Marine Corps’ reading list at one time.
ONE Protein Bars. These have been Kate’s go-to protein bars for a few years. I really enjoy them too. 20 grams of protein and only one gram of sugar. Pretty satiating. They’re a good, somewhat-healthier road trip food. My favorite flavors are maple glazed donut and peanut butter cup; Kate recommends the s’mores variety.
Darby O’Gill and the Little People. Saint Patrick’s Day is coming up so our family will be taking part in our annual watching of Disney’s 1959 classic, Darby O’Gill and the Little People. This St. Patrick’s Day tradition started with my mom when I was a kid, and I’ve continued it with Gus and Scout. It’s got Sean Connery in it. He’s great, of course. James Bond even sings in it.
Quote of the Week
What helps luck is a habit of watching for opportunities, of having a patient, but restless mind, of sacrificing one’s ease or vanity, of uniting a love of detail to foresight, and of passing through hard times bravely and cheerfully.
